PTE Direct (trading) is based on Vancouver Island in Canada and has been here since May 2007 (what a beautiful part of the world), since moving from Australia. Currently PTE Direct exports to many countries around the world (North America, Germany, Sweden, UK, Asia, South America, South Africa and the Middle East to name a few) and is always continuing to welcome new clients to our web site. PTE Direct has become a renowned wholesale directly to many jewelers for their local market as well as sells direct to customers looking for a unique opal. PTE Direct is made up of Peter (Me), my wife Tammy (a Canadian born girl), and our 2 girls Mia (4 yrs) and Abbegayle (2 yrs). I am the proprietor of PTE, though we all work as a family in the business to bring to you the best service possible. I was born in South Australia and grew up entirely in the country /outback of South Australia. Since the age of 10, I have been in and around the mining, cutting and wholesaling of opals. I am a qualified Registered Nurse working part-time in the medical field to supplement the business and ultimately keep PTE’s prices at as low as possible.
Having grown up in the outback/country of Australia, I have a vast knowledge of opals and jewelry and know many of the local miners in many of the towns around Australia. I therefore have the ability, knowledge and reputation to buy direct from the miners at prices you could not match. Yes, I am not a miner, but there are many advantages to not owning our own opal mine; I don’t have bad years for finding opal and do not need to over inflate my prices just to make a living. I do not have to worry about unplanned machinery breakdowns and the costs to repairing them. I do not get stuck with all the rubbish opal (so I can be very fussy), or come across pockets of opal that are relatively the same in colour and quality. I just buy from long standing reputable miners at the best price going (all around Australia). I also buy in bulk and from a majority of miners who do not want to do anything else but dig in their mine and go home at night for a beer (they are a funny bunch most of these miners). The other major advantage is that I do not need to make enough money in 8 months of the year (as mining shuts down for 4+ months due to the intense heat in the outback) to survive as the miners do.
